The best hiking routes in Parcul Național Cheile Nerei-Beușnița

Parcul Național Cheile Nerei-Beușnița is defined by its deep limestone gorges, dense beech forests, and active karst hydrology. Unlike the high, rocky peaks of neighboring mountain ranges, this park is a landscape of water erosion, where rivers have carved steep, forested ravines into the soft limestone plateau. Walkers should expect a damp, shaded environment under a thick canopy, with the constant sound of rushing water.

The underfoot conditions vary from soft forest loam and leaf litter to slippery limestone rocks, exposed tree roots, and narrow, hand-carved ledge paths directly above the river. Some sections require crossing the water via simple suspension bridges or wading through shallow sections when the trail runs along the riverbed. The karst geology is visible in the striking turquoise pools, such as Ochiul Beiului, and the moss-covered travertine barriers that form the Beușnița waterfalls.

While the main trails along the Nera Gorge and towards the waterfalls are popular and well-marked, the steeper side trails climbing onto the limestone plateaus are much quieter. These higher paths lead through dry, scrubby sub-Mediterranean vegetation, offering a sharp contrast to the humid, shaded canyon floors below.
