The best hiking routes in Parco Naturale Regionale di Porto Selvaggio e Palude del Capitano

Parco Naturale Regionale di Porto Selvaggio e Palude del Capitano offers two distinct coastal landscapes along the Ionian shore of Apulia. The northern section near the Palude del Capitano features a flat karst wetland where underground freshwater springs, known locally as spunnulate, have collapsed to form brackish pools. Here, walkers follow low, rocky paths through salt-tolerant scrub and marsh vegetation, where the ground is sharp limestone and low-lying clay. There are no sandy beaches in this sector, only a rugged, fractured shoreline where the water meets the bare rock.

Further south, the landscape changes to the dense pine forest of Porto Selvaggio, planted in the mid-twentieth century to reforest the rocky slopes. Walking here means following wide, stony dirt tracks under a canopy of Aleppo pines, which provide constant shade. The terrain is gently undulating, sloping down toward the sea. The main paths lead to the pebble cove of Porto Selvaggio, a well-known spot that can be busy with swimmers, especially in July and August.

This reserve does not have high cliffs or sandy dunes. Instead, walkers should expect a mix of sharp, uneven limestone karst underfoot and needle-covered forest tracks. Sturdy footwear is necessary to navigate the jagged rocks near the water. While the pine forest offers a sheltered, wooded environment, the northern marshland is completely exposed, with no tree cover to break the low Mediterranean macchia.
