Naturpark Lüneburger Heide is a gently rolling landscape defined by vast inland heathlands, oak woods, and peat bogs. Walking here means navigating a mix of deep, loose sand tracks that require steady effort, and firmer dirt paths through the pine forests. The terrain is mostly flat with low, undulating hills, so you will not find steep climbs or deep ravines here. Instead, the landscape opens up into wide, purple-hued shrub plains in August and September, while the boggy areas feature wooden boardwalks to keep you clear of the wet peat.

The open heath you see today is the result of centuries of traditional grazing by Heidschnucken sheep, which prevents birch and pine trees from taking over. On the ground, you will notice the stark contrast between the pale, dry sand of the main trails and the dark, damp soil near the valley mires.
