The best hiking routes in Národný park Muránska planina

Národný park Muránska planina is a karst plateau defined by steep limestone cliffs that drop sharply into deep forested valleys. Unlike the high, jagged peaks of the nearby Tatras, the landscape here is characterized by a high-altitude rolling plateau covered in dense beech and spruce forests, interspersed with wide mountain meadows. Underfoot, you will mostly find rocky limestone paths, loose stones, and forest soil, with some sections of wooden steps on the steepest ascents. The karst geology means surface water is rare on the plateau itself, as rain quickly drains into a vast network of underground caves and sinkholes.

Walking here feels enclosed and wooded, with occasional openings onto grassy clearings where semi-wild horses graze. These meadows, or poloniny, are a distinct feature of the park, maintained by traditional grazing rather than natural timberlines. The trails vary from wide, stony forestry tracks to narrow, root-filled paths that hug the edges of the gorges. You will notice the dramatic transition from the damp, shaded gorge bottoms filled with ferns to the dry, sun-exposed limestone cliffs above.

This park is best suited for walkers who prefer quiet forest immersion and karst topography over high-altitude ridge walking. The trail network is well-marked but can feel rugged and isolated, with fewer mountain huts than in more developed Slovak parks. While the ruins of Muráň Castle draw some visitors, much of the plateau remains quiet, offering a consistent experience of deep woodland and limestone terrain.
