Nærøyfjorden landskapsvernområde is defined by its verticality. Unlike flatter coastal regions, walking here means choosing between steep, historic postal paths carved into the rock face and high-altitude mountain terrain. The lower paths follow the shoreline of the fjord, where the ground consists of damp soil, loose scree, and moss-covered boulders. These routes are shaded by dense deciduous trees and are often humid, with water dripping from the cliffs above.

As you climb higher toward the rim of the fjord, the forest thins into alpine tundra. Underfoot, the terrain changes to hard metamorphic rock, dwarf willow shrubs, and patches of late-summer snow that persist into August. There are no gentle, rolling meadows here; the transition from the water's edge to the high plateau is abrupt and physically demanding.
