About Litoral Norte
Litoral Norte offers a coastal walking landscape dominated by low sand dunes, pine forests, and estuary marshes rather than dramatic cliffs or deep valleys. Stretching along the Atlantic shoreline, the terrain is shaped by constant coastal winds and shifting sands, which are stabilized in places by marram grass and planted pine woods. Walkers will find a mix of soft sandy tracks that require steady effort, firmer dirt paths through the shaded pine groves, and elevated wooden boardwalks designed to protect the fragile dune ecosystems near the river mouths.

As you walk, the transition between different habitats is sharp. The seaward side consists of exposed, low-lying dunes where the underfooting is loose sand. Moving just a short distance inland, the landscape shifts to agricultural fields separated by traditional stone walls and windbreaks, followed by the quiet, brackish waters of the Cávado estuary. This estuary zone features tidal mudflats and salt marshes, where the ground is softer and often bordered by reeds.
In the autumn months, particularly October, the estuary areas become key observation points for migrating wetland birds, while the pine forests provide shelter from the strongest coastal breezes. Litoral Norte is not a place of vast wilderness, as small fishing villages and agricultural plots are never far from the trail. It is, however, a reliable choice for those seeking flat, sea-level walking with a clear view of how coastal vegetation adapts to a sandy, salt-sprayed environment.
