About Jotunheimen nasjonalpark

Jotunheimen nasjonalpark is characterized by high-alpine terrain defined by sharp gabbro peaks, steep ridges, and active glaciers. Unlike the rounded, soil-covered plateaus found in much of southern Norway, this area is dominated by bare rock, extensive blockfields of loose stone, and permanent ice fields. Walkers will find that the landscape is divided between deep, lake-filled valleys like Gjende and Russvatnet, and the high summits that rise sharply above them.

Underfoot, the trails vary from stony dirt paths in the valley bottoms to rough, trackless boulder fields higher up, where route-finding relies on painted red T-markers on the rocks. Glacial meltwater streams cross many of the routes, requiring wading or the use of seasonal summer bridges. Vegetation is sparse, limited to dwarf birch and willow in the lower valleys, which quickly give way to lichens and mosses on the higher slopes.

In July and August, the main valley paths and the classic ridge route over Besseggen are heavily trafficked, while the interior valleys and northern sectors offer more isolation. The terrain is demanding, requiring constant attention to footing due to wet slabs, loose scree, and steep ascents rather than gentle, rolling forest walks.
