About Fulufjellet nasjonalpark

Fulufjellet nasjonalpark offers a distinct walking experience dominated by a high, gently undulating mountain plateau that lacks the jagged peaks found in other Norwegian ranges. The landscape is characterized by a stark contrast between dry, boulder-strewn lichen heaths on the higher ground and wet, peat-filled mires in the depressions. Walkers will notice how the open, treeless plateau abruptly transitions into steep, pine-clad slopes along the eastern edge, where ancient, slow-growing trees have stood undisturbed for centuries.

Underfoot, the terrain demands careful attention. While some established paths follow relatively firm, sandy glacial deposits, large sections of the plateau require navigating directly over loose scree, block fields, and soft peat. Boardwalks are present over the most fragile boggy sections, but walkers should expect rough, uneven ground as the norm. The vegetation is low and sparse, consisting mainly of dwarf birch, heather, and thick carpets of grey reindeer lichen that crunch underfoot during dry summer months like August.

This park is generally quieter than its Swedish neighbor, Fulufjallet, meaning you are less likely to encounter managed gravel highways and large crowds. Instead, the infrastructure here is minimal, appealing to those who prefer navigating by map and compass across open terrain. The main features to observe are the geological formations, such as the distinct stone rings sorted by frost action, which are visible right beside the higher tracks.
