About Chránená krajinná oblasť Záhorie
Chránená krajinná oblasť Záhorie offers a distinct contrast to the mountainous terrain found in most of Slovakia. Located in the western lowlands, this protected area is divided into two contrasting landscape types. When walking through the pine forests, you will notice the highly permeable sandy soil, which prevents water from pooling on the surface and supports only drought-resistant vegetation like mosses and lichens. Near the Morava river, the landscape is shaped by seasonal flooding, leaving behind rich alluvial clay and a dense network of wetlands and oxbow lakes. The transition between these dry sand dunes and wet river meadows is sudden, requiring different footwear depending on which section you choose to explore.
This is a low-lying, gently undulating landscape with no high peaks or deep valleys. While the riverbanks are popular with cyclists and local anglers, the deeper pine forests are often quieter, offering straightforward walking along forestry tracks. In late summer, particularly around August, the dry forest floors are dominated by heather, while the river meadows remain green and lush.
