The best hiking routes in Chránená krajinná oblasť Ponitrie

Chránená krajinná oblasť Ponitrie spans two distinct geological zones in western Slovakia, creating a sharp contrast for walkers. In the southern Tribeč section, the paths climb through dense, old-growth oak and beech forests growing over a crystalline core and limestone outcrops. Underfoot, the ground is firm, covered in leaf litter and loose stones, with occasional steep climbs up to rocky crests. In contrast, the northern Vtáčnik section is volcanic, characterized by dark andesite rocks, steep cliffs, and deeper, more humid ravines where spruce and fir trees dominate.

Walkers will notice how the vegetation changes with the soil. The limestone areas in the south support dry, open oak groves where light reaches the forest floor, while the volcanic soils of the north produce a much denser canopy and damp, mossy ground. There are no high alpine peaks or deep glacial lakes here; instead, the landscape consists of heavily forested, rolling volcanic ridges and dry limestone hills.

While the main ridge trails are well-marked with standard Slovak hiking signs, the terrain off the main paths can be rugged, with exposed roots and rocky steps. The lower valleys are often quiet, whereas the prominent volcanic viewpoints and castle ruins on the southern limestone cliffs attract more visitors on weekends.
