The best hiking routes in Västra Götaland County

Västra Götaland County offers a choice between two distinct walking environments: the exposed, rocky coastlines of the west and the dense, boulder-strewn forests of the interior. On the coast, places like Kosteröarnas naturreservat present bare granite slabs, coastal meadows, and shingle fields where the walking is firm but uneven. Further south, the peninsula of Trossö-Kalvö-Lindö naturreservat connects three islands by narrow land bridges, offering paths over sandy soils and coastal heathland.

Inland, the terrain changes to dense coniferous forests growing over rugged bedrock. In Tivedens nationalpark, you will walk over massive glacial boulders and deep fissures, where the path relies heavily on wooden steps and boardwalks to navigate the steep, rocky clefts.
