About Uri
Uri is a region of stark vertical contrasts, where deep valley floors quickly give way to sheer granite cliffs and high alpine pastures. Walking here means choosing between the flat, historic paths along the Reuss river delta on the shores of Lake Lucerne, or committing to steep, demanding ascents into the high mountains. The landscape is defined by this sudden elevation, meaning you will often find yourself looking up at massive rock walls or down onto the roofs of villages far below.

Underfoot, the paths reflect this rugged geography. Valley trails are often wide, gravelled, and easy to follow, while the higher routes turn into narrow, rocky tracks where you will step over loose shale, exposed tree roots, and granite steps. Because of the steep terrain, many of the higher paths are only accessible from June to October, when the winter snow has finally cleared from the passes.
This is a working mountain landscape, not an untouched wilderness. As you walk, you will pass active dairy farms, hear the clatter of cowbells on the high slopes, and see the small cable cars used by farmers to transport goods. While the famous routes around the Gotthard Pass and the lake can be busy with travellers, taking a side valley path often leads to much quieter, forested trails where the sound of rushing meltwater is the only constant companion.
