The best hiking routes in Smolyan

Smolyan is set in a deep, forested valley of the Western Rhodope Mountains, where the walking experience splits between the steep, rocky gorge floors and the high, grassy meadows above the tree line. The lower paths follow riverbeds shaded by dense spruce and beech, where the ground is a mix of damp soil, mossy boulders, and wooden footbridges. In contrast, climbing out of the valley leads to open limestone ridges and rolling pastures where the terrain underfoot changes to dry, stony dirt tracks and short grass.

For a dramatic walk close to the water, the Canyon of the Waterfalls offers a rugged route over wooden bridges and damp forest loam, dominated by the sound of rushing streams and sheer rock faces. If you prefer wide views over the mountain ridges, the paths heading toward the Soskovcheto reserve area lead upward into open pine woods and high alpine meadows. You will not find jagged, snow-capped alpine peaks here; the landscape is characterized by massive, rounded green ridges and deep, forested folds.

In May, the high meadows around the town are bright with fresh green grass and wild orchids, while the forest paths remain cool and shaded. The trails are generally well-marked, though the steep gorge routes require careful footing on wet wood and loose shale, whereas the ridge paths are wider and gentler. The area near the canyon trailhead can be busy on weekends, but the higher forest tracks quickly become quiet, offering a solitary walk through working timber forests and mountain pastures.
