The best hiking routes in Sliven

Сливен is defined by a dramatic transition where the flat Thracian plain meets the steep southern slopes of the Balkan Mountains. Walkers here must choose between the rugged, rocky terrain immediately overlooking the city and the more forested, rolling ridges further inland. Underfoot, the paths vary from loose limestone scree and steep stone steps near the urban edge to soft leaf litter and dirt tracks under the canopy of the interior forests.

For a dramatic, rocky landscape, the nature reserve Природен парк Сините камъни rises directly above the city. This area is characterized by steep, grey-blue quartz-porphyry cliffs and open, stony paths that require careful stepping. In contrast, the protected areas of Котленска планина and Твърдишка планина offer dense beech forests and gentler, undulating ridges. These forested zones provide shaded, earthy tracks that feel much more enclosed and isolated than the exposed rock faces closer to Сливен.

This landscape reflects its geological position on a major fault line, which is why the southern slopes of Природен парк Сините камъни are so abrupt and sheer compared to the gradual northern decline of Твърдишка планина.
