The Region of Crete is defined by its stark geological divide. Walkers must choose between deep, sheer-sided limestone gorges and high, arid mountain massifs. Underfoot, the terrain is consistently demanding, characterized by loose scree, sharp karst limestone, and dry, stony torrent beds that require sturdy footwear and careful foot placement.
