The best hiking routes in Haskovo

Haskovo sits in a transition zone of southern Bulgaria where low, rounded hills meet wide river plains. Walkers will find a landscape shaped by dry Mediterranean influences and traditional agriculture, meaning there are no dramatic high peaks or deep alpine valleys here. Instead, the terrain offers gentle, open ridges and wide-horizon dirt tracks that can feel dusty underfoot in late summer.

To the east, the low-lying hills of Сакар present a sparse, rolling landscape dominated by open pastures, shrublands, and scattered oak trees. Walking here is straightforward, following wide dirt roads and farm tracks over gentle slopes. The area is known for its quiet, rural character, where the main features are ancient burial mounds and birds of prey nesting in the open canopy.

In contrast, the lowlands of Марица - Първомай follow the broad alluvial plain of the Maritsa River. The walking here is flat, tracing riverbanks, agricultural fields, and patches of dense riparian forest. Underfoot, the paths alternate between packed earth and sandy river deposits, offering a completely different, water-dominated perspective on the region.
