The best hiking routes in Andalusia

Andalusia offers sharp contrasts between high-altitude alpine terrain and coastal wetlands. In the south, Parque Nacional de Sierra Nevada contains the highest peaks on the Iberian Peninsula, where paths consist of loose shale and rocky scree. These barren, treeless heights feel entirely different from the low-lying marshes of Parque Nacional de Doñana on the Atlantic coast, where walkers follow sandy tracks and wooden boardwalks through pine forests and shifting dunes.

Further inland, the landscape changes to arid badlands and limestone massifs. In the Geoparque de Granada, the trails cross dry clay ravines and dramatic dust-colored canyons formed by water erosion, which are especially striking in the low light of October. This contrasts with the steep, olive-grove-covered slopes of Parque Natural de Sierra Mágina, where the underfoot is dominated by sharp limestone rocks and rosemary scrub.

This region is not a land of gentle green meadows or dense, damp forests. Walkers should expect dry, exposed paths with very little shade, where the vegetation is adapted to survive long periods without water. While popular trailheads in the Sierra Nevada can be busy on weekends, the remote tracks of the Geoparque de Granada are often quieter and see few visitors.
