What if I don't know my password or signed in via Google/Apple?
No password? We solve it together
For end-to-end chat you always need your own account password — even if you sign in via Google, Facebook or Apple. That's because your password is the key that protects your encrypted messages, and that has to be something only you know.
Signed in via Google, Facebook or Apple?
Social login gives you a random server-generated password you don't know. To use chat, you have to set your own password:
- Open chat — you'll automatically see a notice that you don't have a password yet
- Tap Email me a link
- We'll email a password-reset link to the address on your account
- Open the link, choose a password, and return to the app
- The next time you open chat, we'll ask for your new password once and you're set
Forgot your password?
No worries. The chat password prompt has a "Forgot or don't know your password?" button that takes you to the same reset flow. After choosing a new password, you can open your chats again.
Important:
- After a password reset, older messages remain readable on other devices
- On the current device you do lose the private key (because we have to restore the encrypted backup with the new password) — open chat again to re-download the backup and decrypt everything
- We can't recover your old password — that would break the end-to-end promise
