The best hiking routes in Luxembourg

Luxembourg divides into two distinct landscapes. In the north, Canton Clervaux and Canton Wiltz form part of a high, wooded plateau cut by deep river valleys. Here, paths climb steeply through dense spruce forests and over slate ridges, where the soil underfoot is often stony and thin. This is a region of quiet, working forests and steep climbs, lacking high mountain peaks but offering constant, demanding elevation changes.

Further south, the terrain softens into rolling farmland and sandstone formations. Canton Echternach is famous for its labyrinthine rock crevices and narrow stone passages, where paths run over sandy soil and exposed tree roots. In contrast, Canton Grevenmacher and Canton Remich slope gently down to the Moselle River, where wide dirt tracks cut through terraced vineyards and open orchards. These southern paths are generally wider and less steep than the northern trails.

In October, the beech forests of Canton Mersch turn a deep copper, making it a reliable autumn destination. The paths here are mostly clay and leaf litter, winding through quiet valley bottoms. While the popular rock formations in Echternach attract larger groups on weekends, the rural paths of Canton Redange remain much quieter, offering straightforward walking across open fields and through small farming villages.
