About Bulgaria

Bulgaria offers two distinct walking environments. The high-altitude southwest, including Sofia-град, Благоевград, and Кюстендил, features steep granite ridges and glacial lakes. Here, paths are often rough granite scree and alpine meadows, where snow patches remain in June. These areas lack gentle foothills, rising sharply from the valleys to exposed peaks above the treeline.

In contrast, the southern and central regions of Смолян, Кърджали, and Хасково present a softer, forested landscape. The paths here run on packed earth and pine needles through deep valleys and limestone gorges. This terrain lacks the sharp alpine edges of the west, offering instead shaded woodland walking and karst formations.

The northwestern border regions of Видин and Монтана offer quieter, less-frequented trails through beech forests and sandstone cliffs. Walkers will find overgrown paths and old forestry tracks rather than waymarked alpine routes. This is a region of low, rolling hills that lacks the dramatic lakes of the south but provides solitary walking through rural valleys.
