The best hiking routes in ZPE Évora

ZPE Évora is a vast, open Mediterranean steppe landscape characterized by gently rolling plains and extensive cereal cultivation, interspersed with traditional holm oak woodlands. Unlike the rugged mountain ranges or dense pine forests found in other parts of Portugal, this protected area offers a wide, horizontal landscape dominated by dry grassland and agricultural fields. Walkers will find a terrain shaped by centuries of extensive farming, where the vegetation is adapted to survive long, dry summers.

Underfoot, the paths are primarily unpaved agricultural tracks, composed of hard-packed earth and gravel that can become dusty in the dry months. There are no boardwalks or signposted recreational trail networks here; instead, walking relies on navigating these farm tracks. The landscape is open and exposed, with little shade outside the scattered patches of holm oak. In spring, particularly around April, the fallow fields transform with a brief cover of wildflowers, which quickly dries to a uniform golden-brown by mid-summer.

This area is a designated Special Protection Area, meaning the landscape is managed to support open-country birds like the great bustard and lesser kestrel. Walkers should expect a quiet, working agricultural environment rather than a manicured park. The appeal lies in the subtle variations of the plains and the traditional montado system, where cork and holm oaks are integrated with pasture, offering a direct look at Alentejo's traditional land-use patterns.
