About Značajni krajobraz Učka - sjeverni dio

Značajni krajobraz Učka - sjeverni dio covers the northern, lower-lying limestone slopes of the Učka massif, where the landscape transitions from dense sub-Mediterranean forests to open, rocky pastures. Unlike the high, rocky ridges of the main Učka peak further south, this protected area is characterized by gentler, undulating karst topography. Walkers will notice a distinct contrast between the shaded beech and oak woodlands on the cooler northern slopes and the dry, exposed limestone pavements that appear as you move toward the edges of the plateau.

Underfoot, the terrain consists mostly of rough, stony dirt tracks and narrow, uneven paths littered with loose limestone debris. There are no paved promenades or flat boardwalks here. The karst geology is visible everywhere along the trail, with sinkholes, small limestone outcrops, and shallow depressions breaking up the forested sections. In May, these wooded areas are filled with fresh green foliage, while the open meadows show early wildflower growth before the summer heat dries the thin soil.

This northern section is generally quieter than the main summit trails near Poklon, attracting those who prefer a solitary walk through working rural landscapes. You will likely encounter drystone walls and overgrown pastures that show how the land was historically cleared for grazing. It is a place for quiet observation of karst features and woodland ecosystems, rather than dramatic cliff edges or panoramic coastal views.
