About Žemaitijos nacionalinis parkas

Žemaitijos nacionalinis parkas is characterized by a hilly glaciated landscape in northwestern Lithuania, where the terrain is dominated by the large, island-studded Lake Plateliai and a dense network of smaller lakes, wetlands, and spruce-deciduous forests. Unlike the flat plains found in other parts of the country, this area features gently rolling moraine hills formed by retreating glaciers. Walkers will notice how the path elevation changes constantly but gently, offering views over the water bodies and peat bogs rather than dramatic cliffs or deep valleys.

Underfoot, the trails vary between firm dirt tracks through the pine and spruce woods, soft pine-needle paths, and wooden boardwalks that cross the wetter peatlands and mires. The Šeirė forest trail, for example, leads walkers directly over swampy lakeshores on raised planks, while other routes follow sandy forest roads. The forest floor is rich with mosses and bilberry shrubs, which turn vibrant green in May and deep red by October.

This park is best suited for those who appreciate quiet forest walking and lakeside paths rather than open, sweeping vistas. While the main lakeside areas near Plateliai town can be busier with visitors during the summer months, the deeper forest trails and wetland boardwalks remain quiet, offering a close-up view of the complex post-glacial terrain.
