Западен Балкан covers the westernmost stretch of the Balkan Mountains, presenting a landscape of rounded grassy ridges, limestone cliffs, and deep river gorges. Unlike the higher, more jagged peaks found further east, this area is characterized by vast, open pastures on high-altitude plateaus and dense beech forests on the lower slopes.
