The best hiking routes in Trollheimen landskapsvernområde

Trollheimen landskapsvernområde offers a distinct transition between the wet, oceanic climate of the Norwegian coast and the drier continental interior. When walking here, you will notice this shift underfoot and in the vegetation. The western valleys feature steep, grassy slopes, birch forests, and boggy peat paths that require careful stepping, while the eastern sections open up into wider, drier pine forests and gravelly mountain plateaus. This is a landscape shaped by deep glacial erosion, leaving behind characteristic U-shaped valleys and high, rounded summits rather than the sharp, jagged peaks found further north.

Footpaths in the protected area are mostly natural soil, rock, and peat, with wooden planks laid over the wettest marsh sections. The terrain is demanding, with significant elevation gains when moving from the valley floors up to the high alpine tundra. In July and August, the alpine meadows are rich with mountain avens and other lime-loving plants, particularly around the nutrient-rich soil of the Innerdalen and Gjevilvassdalen valleys.

Unlike flatter plateau regions, Trollheimen landskapsvernområde requires preparation for steep climbs and descents on uneven, rocky ground. The area is managed to preserve traditional mountain farming, so walkers will regularly encounter active summer dairy farms and grazing livestock alongside the trail network.
