The best hiking routes in Suwalski Park Krajobrazowy

Suwalski Park Krajobrazowy offers a landscape shaped entirely by the last Scandinavian glaciation, resulting in a terrain of steep, grassy ridges, deep lake basins, and vast fields of erratic boulders. Unlike the flat plains found in much of Poland, this area is defined by its dramatic elevation changes, featuring the deepest lake in the country, Lake Hańcza, and the prominent, conical hill of Cisowa G3ra. The terrain is a mix of open meadows, peat bogs, and spruce forests, providing a varied backdrop for walkers who prefer rolling, hilly country over flat forest tracks.

Underfoot, walkers will encounter a combination of stony paths, dirt tracks, and wooden boardwalks over the wetter peat areas. The soil is heavily mixed with gravel and clay, and the presence of thousands of granite boulders scattered across the fields of Bachanowo is a constant feature along the trails. The paths follow the natural contours of the hills, meaning short but steep climbs are common, and the ground can feel uneven due to the stony glacial debris.

This landscape is best understood by observing how the melting ice left behind deep channels, now filled with clear lakes, and high gravel ridges known as eskers. Walkers will notice that the vegetation changes rapidly from dry, exposed hilltops to damp, sheltered valleys within a few hundred metres. The area is generally quiet, though the main viewpoints and the shores of Lake Hańcza attract more visitors during the summer months of July and August.
