Strynefjellet landskapsvernområde offers a high-alpine walking experience dominated by a glaciated plateau, barren rock fields, and meltwater lakes. Unlike the deep, forested valleys of western Norway, this protected area is a high-altitude landscape where vegetation is sparse, limited mostly to hardy dwarf shrubs, lichens, and mosses that cling to the stony ground. Walkers will find a terrain shaped heavily by ice, with visible moraines and polished bedrock slabs defining the route.

Underfoot, the terrain is rugged and demanding. There are few constructed paths or boardwalks; instead, route finding relies on stone cairns across open boulder fields, patches of summer snow, and coarse glacial gravel. Wet peat and boggy depressions occur around the margins of the high lakes, requiring careful stepping, while higher ridges consist of dry, fractured granite. The old road, Gamle Strynefjellsvegen, runs along the border and provides a solid gravel footing, but stepping off this corridor immediately puts you on raw, trackless mountain terrain.

This area is best suited for those who prefer stark, rocky environments over sheltered woodland walks. It does not offer easy, signposted family strolls, and the transition from the green valleys below to this grey, rock-strewn plateau is abrupt. By late August, the summer snow patches shrink to reveal dark, silt-laden tarns, offering a clear view of how active glaciers continue to grind down the stone underfoot.
