The best hiking routes in Sintra-Cascais

The Sintra-Cascais protected area is a landscape of two distinct faces, divided by the ridge of the Sintra hills. To the north, the terrain is dominated by dense, humid forests of oak, pine, and cedar, where moss covers the granite boulders and the air remains damp. Walking here means navigating steep, shaded dirt tracks and stone paths that climb toward the high ridges. The vegetation is thick, often obscuring views but providing deep shade that keeps the forest floor cool.

South of the ridge, the landscape transitions sharply into a dry, wind-swept coastal scrubland. Here, the underfoot changes to loose sand, limestone gravel, and low-lying coastal heath. The paths are exposed, running along high cliffs and rocky limestone pavements that slope down toward the Atlantic. Instead of towering trees, walkers will find hardy, salt-tolerant shrubs and exposed rock formations shaped by the constant maritime winds.

This is not a wilderness of high, alpine peaks, but rather a compact peninsula where maritime cliffs meet a low, forested mountain range. Walkers should expect uneven, rocky terrain underfoot, with significant elevation changes in the forested interior and flatter, sandier tracks along the coast.
