About Rondane nasjonalpark

Rondane nasjonalpark is defined by its massive, rounded stone massifs and deep, dry valleys rather than lush forests or jagged alpine needles. The terrain is dominated by vast fields of grey lichen, dwarf birch, and heather, growing over dry, sandy soil and ancient glacial deposits. Walking here means navigating a landscape shaped by the last ice age, where massive stone rivers of blocky scree cover the slopes and wide, flat terraces of gravel line the valley floors. Underfoot, you will mostly find dry, stony paths, though some lower-lying sections near the rivers transition into peat and damp moss.

Unlike wetter Norwegian parks, Rondane nasjonalpark is notably dry, which affects both the vegetation and the walking conditions. The main trails are well-established, often marked by stone cairns, but the ground remains rough and unforgivingly hard on the feet due to the constant presence of loose rocks and gravel. The central peaks rise above two thousand metres, yet their profiles are blocky and dome-like rather than steep and sheer, meaning climbs are long, steady grinds over boulder fields rather than technical scrambles. In September, the dwarf birch turns a deep red, contrasting sharply with the pale yellow lichen that blankets the soil.

Choosing where to walk depends on your comfort with boulder hopping. The lower valleys, such as Illmanndalen and Langglupdalen, offer relatively flat route options on sandy tracks, though you must still cross occasional boulder tongues that have slid from the heights. Venturing onto the high ridges requires stepping from one large, stable block of sparagmite rock to another, a process that demands constant concentration. There are no boardwalks or paved paths in the core zone, only the raw, stony debris left behind by retreating glaciers.
