The best hiking routes in Reinheimen nasjonalpark

Reinheimen nasjonalpark is characterized by its vast, high-alpine plateaus and rugged, blocky scree slopes. Unlike more rounded, grassy hills, the terrain here is dominated by sharp, frost-shattered rock fields and steep, glacier-carved valleys. The ground is largely untamed, with very few marked trails or signposts compared to neighboring areas. Walkers must navigate using natural landmarks, crossing extensive boulder fields, high-altitude snow patches that persist into August, and wet, trackless peat bogs in the lower depressions.

The underlying geology of hard gneiss and granite means the soil is thin and acidic, supporting mainly hardy lichens, dwarf birch, and alpine willows. This sparse vegetation gives the landscape a grey and pale green appearance, which is particularly noticeable on the higher ridges. Because there are almost no boardwalks or built paths, walkers will find themselves stepping directly onto loose stones, spongy moss, or wet marshland, requiring constant attention to footing and route-finding.

This park is not a place for those seeking gentle, well-trodden forest paths or frequent mountain cabins. It is a demanding landscape where the transition from deep, steep-sided valleys to flat, wind-swept high plains happens abruptly. The lack of infrastructure means you are unlikely to encounter large crowds, but you must be fully prepared to rely on your own navigation skills across trackless, rocky terrain.
