The best hiking routes in Puszcza Notecka

Puszcza Notecka is a vast, lowland forest tract in western Poland, dominated by dense monocultures of Scots pine planted on a massive inland dune field. Unlike more varied European woodlands, this landscape is characterized by its uniformity, a result of systematic replanting after a devastating caterpillar infestation in the 1920s. Walkers will find a gently undulating terrain where dry, sandy soils dictate the vegetation, meaning you will mostly encounter mossy forest floors, heather, and lichen rather than lush undergrowth.

Underfoot, the tracks are predominantly loose sand, which can make walking slow and demanding, interspersed with firmer forestry roads. While the dry pine barrens cover the elevated dunes, the landscape occasionally dips into damp depressions and peat bogs, particularly near the Noteć and Warta rivers that border the forest. These wetter pockets introduce birch, alder, and small lakes, offering a brief contrast to the otherwise dry, repetitive pine canopy.
