About Parque Natural de Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche

Parque Natural de Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche offers a wooded, undulating landscape that differs sharply from the arid plains of southern Spain. This is not a region of high, barren peaks or dramatic limestone gorges. Instead, walkers will find a dense network of ancient paths, often enclosed by stone walls, winding through extensive dehesas of holm and cork oak, as well as damp chestnut groves. Underfoot, the paths alternate between packed earth, loose slate, and old stone paving that can be slippery when wet.

The landscape is shaped by traditional agriculture and pig rearing. Walkers will constantly encounter Iberian pigs foraging under the oaks, particularly during the montanera season from November to January. The northern slopes around Alájar and Fuenteheridos feature wetter, shaded valleys with ferns and mosses, while the southern ridges present drier, scrubbier Mediterranean vegetation.

Most routes connect white-washed villages, meaning walks are broken up by historic settlements rather than wilderness. While popular paths near Aracena see regular foot traffic, the western trails toward Aroche are much quieter.
