About Parque Natural da Ria Formosa
Parque Natural da Ria Formosa is a vast coastal lagoon system in southern Portugal, shaped by a labyrinth of salt marshes, tidal channels, mudflats, and barrier islands. Unlike the rocky cliffs found further west in the Algarve, this landscape is entirely flat, dominated by the daily rise and fall of the tide. Walkers should expect to choose between two distinct environments: the mainland salt pans and pine woodlands, or the exposed sandy barrier islands that shield the lagoon from the Atlantic Ocean.

Underfoot, the terrain dictates the pace. Mainland routes, such as those near Quinta do Lago or Olhão, often feature firm dirt tracks, salt-marsh boardwalks, and pine-needle paths. In contrast, walking on the barrier islands like Ilha da Culatra or Ilha de Tavira requires tramping through deep, soft sand along the beaches and dunes, which is physically demanding. The vegetation changes rapidly from salt-tolerant succulent scrub on the mudflats to hardy beach grass and aromatic curry plants on the dunes.
This is a working landscape where traditional salt harvesting and shellfish farming are visible from the paths. Birdwatchers gather here particularly in November, when migratory waders and flamingos settle in the shallow pans. While the main trailheads near parking areas and resort edges see regular foot traffic, the deeper dike paths and outer island beaches offer a much quieter, wind-exposed walking experience.
