About Park Krajobrazowy Doliny Sanu

Park Krajobrazowy Doliny Sanu offers a distinct walking experience shaped by the wide, meandering valley of the San River and the forested ridges of the Eastern Carpathians. Unlike the high, rocky crests of the nearby high peaks, this landscape consists of long, parallel forested ridges separated by broad, damp valleys. Walkers will find themselves moving between dense beech and fir forests on the slopes and open, grassy clearings known as polonynas on the higher elevations. The remnants of displaced pre-war villages are still visible along the valley floors, marked by old orchards, wild fruit trees, and stone ruins that have been reclaimed by the vegetation.

Underfoot, the terrain alternates between soft forest soil, clay tracks that retain moisture, and stony paths along the riverbanks. The river itself is a constant presence, and several routes require crossing smaller tributaries via simple wooden footbridges or shallow fords. The valley floor is characterized by marshy meadows and alder woods, which contrast sharply with the dry, leaf-littered ground under the dense canopy of the beech forests on the hillsides.

In late October, the beech forests turn a deep copper color, making the wooded ridges particularly striking against the dark green firs. The park is generally quieter than the adjacent high-altitude trails, though the main paths near the river can see more foot traffic during the summer months. Walking here requires attention to the terrain, as the clay paths on the slopes can be slippery and the trail markings in the denser forest sections demand careful navigation.
