The best hiking routes in Parcul Național Semenic - Cheile Carașului

Parcul Național Semenic - Cheile Carașului is defined by its extensive limestone geology and ancient beech forests. Unlike the high, rocky peaks of the neighboring Făgăraș range, this park consists of a high plateau that drops into deep, steep-sided river canyons. The landscape is heavily karstified, meaning you will walk past sinkholes, limestone pavements, and cave entrances rather than open alpine meadows. The forest floor is thick with leaf litter, and the canopy of the Izvoarele Nerei reserve contains some of the oldest undisturbed beech trees in Europe, giving the woodlands a dark, cathedral-like atmosphere.

Underfoot, the terrain varies sharply between the plateau and the gorges. Walking on the Semenic plateau involves wide, grassy tracks and dirt paths that cross gentle ridges. Once you descend into the Cheile Carașului or Cheile Gârliștei, the paths become narrow, rocky, and uneven. You will navigate limestone scree, slippery river stones, and sections where the trail is carved directly into the canyon walls. These gorge sections require careful footwork, especially where the path runs close to the water level.

In late October, the beech forests turn a uniform copper-red, which contrasts sharply with the grey limestone cliffs of the gorges. The park is vast, and while the trailheads near Anina and Reșița see regular weekend visitors, the deep interior valleys and the high plateau tracks remain quiet. There are no high-altitude ridges here; instead, the appeal lies in the transition from the quiet, shaded forest interior to the dramatic, enclosed rock walls of the canyons.
