About Parcul Național Retezat
Parcul Național Retezat is defined by its high-altitude glacial topography, characterized by sharp granite peaks, deep cirques, and over eighty glacial lakes. Unlike the limestone ridges found in other parts of the Carpathians, the core of this park is dominated by hard, grey crystalline rock. Walkers should expect steep, demanding climbs over loose scree, massive boulder fields, and rough stone steps. The tree line ends relatively low, giving way to vast zones of dwarf pine and open alpine pastures where the trail is marked directly on the rocks.

The park is split into two distinct geological zones. The northern section is the high granite massif, where routes like the climb to Peleaga or Păpușa require careful foot placement on uneven, rocky ground. In contrast, the southern part, often referred to as the limestone Retezat, features karst formations, steep gorges, and dry valleys where water disappears underground. Boardwalks are virtually non-existent here; instead, paths are traditional mountain trails that require sturdy footwear and a head for heights.
Water is a constant presence in the granite sector, with Bucura and Zănoaga lakes serving as major landmarks. In June, the melting snow feeds rushing torrents and fills the peat bogs around the lake basins, while the higher passes can remain blocked by snow patches well into the summer. This is a demanding mountain environment where progress is slow due to the rugged terrain, and walkers must be prepared for steep gradients rather than gentle forest strolls.
