The best hiking routes in Parco Regionale del Monte Subasio

Parco Regionale del Monte Subasio is defined by its dome-like limestone massif, which rises above the Umbrian valley. Unlike the jagged peaks of the higher Apennines, this mountain features a broad, rounded summit plateau dominated by open, windswept pastures. The lower slopes are heavily wooded, covered in dense stands of holm oak, beech, and olive groves that terrace the hillsides. Walking here means transitioning from these shaded, stony forest paths to the wide, grassy tracks of the upper meadows, where the limestone bedrock often breaks through the thin soil.

The landscape reflects centuries of grazing and spiritual history, with the Franciscan hermitage of Eremo delle Carceri nestled in an oak wood on the gorge slopes. On the open pastures of the summit ridge, sinkholes and karst depressions pit the ground, showing how rainwater has dissolved the limestone over millennia. Underfoot, the trails vary from gravelly white dirt roads, known locally as strade bianche, to rough, rocky singletracks that require careful stepping among loose stones.

In May, the high meadows are colored by wild orchids and narcissi, making this the clearest period to observe the contrast between the bare, stony summit and the cultivated valley below. While the lower trails near Assisi can be busy with visitors exploring the historic sites, the higher paths toward the peak of Monte Subasio offer a much quieter, more exposed walking experience where the main features are the sheep tracks and the limestone sinkholes.
