The best hiking routes in Parco Naturale Regionale Costa Otranto - Santa Maria di Leuca e Bosco di Tricase

This coastal park stretches along the rocky eastern edge of the Salento peninsula, offering a stark landscape dominated by limestone cliffs, dry stone walls, and low Mediterranean scrub. Unlike the sandy beaches found on the western coast of Puglia, the terrain here is rugged and elevated, characterized by sharp karst formations, deep coastal clefts known as canaloni, and ancient terraced olive groves. Walkers will find a network of narrow dirt tracks, old donkey paths, and rocky trails that require sturdy footwear due to the uneven, sharp limestone underfoot.

As you walk, the landscape reveals its agricultural and defensive history through visible structures. You will constantly pass pajare, which are traditional dry-stone huts resembling small pyramids, and fortified watchtowers overlooking the Adriatic Sea. The vegetation changes from wind-sheared macchia shrubs on the exposed clifftops to the rare, dense canopy of Valonia oaks in the Bosco di Tricase section, providing a rare patch of shade in an otherwise sun-baked environment. The paths are generally open and rocky, with no high peaks or deep forested valleys, but rather a gently undulating coastal plateau.

In April and May, the rocky ground is colored by wild orchids and coastal wildflowers before the summer heat dries the vegetation. While popular coastal access points like the inlet of Porto Badisco or the lighthouse at Punta Palascia attract visitors, the long stretches of cliff path between these landmarks are often quieter, offering a solitary walking experience. There are no sandy beaches or boardwalks here; instead, the route demands careful stepping over loose stones and exposed bedrock along the cliff edges.
