The best hiking routes in Parco Naturale del Monte Fenera

Parco Naturale del Monte Fenera rises abruptly from the Sesia valley floor, presenting a landscape of steep karst limestone that contrasts sharply with the surrounding alluvial plains. Unlike the high granite peaks of the nearby Alps, this park is characterized by dense deciduous woodlands, deep gorges, and a complex network of caves carved into the soluble rock. Walkers will notice how the terrain transitions from damp, mossy chestnut forests on the lower slopes to drier, scrubby oak and hornbeam stands along the higher limestone ridges.

Underfoot, the paths vary from soft forest loam and leaf litter to sharp, exposed limestone bedrock and loose scree on the steeper ascents. The karst geology means surface water is scarce on the upper heights, as rainfall quickly disappears into the subterranean cave systems, leaving the ridges dry and rocky. In spring, particularly around April, the forest floor is briefly carpeted with wild flowers before the dense canopy closes over and shades the trails.

This park is best suited for those who enjoy rugged, forested hill walking rather than open alpine pastures or high-altitude vistas. While the lower, wider tracks near the park entrances are straightforward, the interior trails climbing toward the summit of Monte Fenera require careful footwork over uneven stone and exposed roots. It is a terrain of enclosed, intimate woodland views, where the interest lies in the limestone cliffs, sinkholes, and archaeological cave sites visible from the path.
