About Parc naturel Haute-Sûre Forêt d'Anlier
The Parc naturel Haute-Sûre Forêt d'Anlier is defined by two contrasting landscapes that meet along a geological boundary. In the north, the Haute-Sûre basin features deep, winding slate valleys carved by the Sûre river, where steep wooded slopes rise above narrow meadows. In the south, the massive Forêt d'Anlier stands on a high, rolling quartzite plateau, forming one of the largest continuous broadleaf forests in the region, dominated by mature beech and oak trees.
Underfoot, the paths reflect this underlying geology. Walking in the northern river valleys means navigating stony, slate-strewn tracks that can be uneven, with occasional steep climbs out of the ravines. On the southern plateau, the forest tracks are wider, clay-heavy, and lined with deep leaf litter, which becomes soft and damp under the dense canopy. You will notice how the light changes abruptly from the open, grassy valley bottoms of the Sûre to the dim, cathedral-like interior of the beech forest.
This area is not a place of dramatic mountain peaks or rocky gorges, but rather one of quiet, enclosed woodland and rural valleys. While the shores of the Lac de la Haute-Sûre attract more visitors, the deep interior of the Forêt d'Anlier remains quiet, offering long, steady walks through uniform timber stands where the main variation comes from the changing tree species and the occasional damp clearing.
