Parc naturel du Pays des collines offers a distinct walking landscape in western Belgium, characterized by a dense network of low, rounded hills that rise gently above the surrounding flat Flemish plains. Unlike the flat agricultural lands nearby, this area is defined by its ridge lines, small woodlots, and sunken lanes. The terrain underfoot consists largely of heavy clay and loamy soils, which means paths can feel soft and sticky underfoot, interspersed with paved agricultural lanes and occasional cobblestones. It is a working rural landscape where quiet pastures, willow-lined streams, and small-scale crop fields sit side by side.

Walking here means navigating a patchwork of small beech woods, such as the Muziekbos on the regional border, and open ridges that offer clear views over agricultural valleys. The elevation changes are frequent but modest, avoiding steep climbs or deep gorges. Instead, the trails rise and fall gradually, guiding you through damp valley bottoms and up to exposed crests where rows of pollard willows mark old property boundaries. In late April and early May, the forest floors in the wooded sections are covered with wild bluebells, a seasonal feature that draws more visitors to the otherwise quiet woodland paths.
