The best hiking routes in Paraje Natural Cascada de Cimbarra

Paraje Natural Cascada de Cimbarra is defined by a dramatic sandstone gorge carved by the Guarrizas River, where the flat clay plains of northern Andalusia abruptly drop into deep, rocky ravines. Walkers here will find a stark contrast between the dry, scrubby Mediterranean hillsides dominated by rosemary and holm oak, and the humid microclimate of the riverbed below. The main draw is the sheer vertical rock face of the Cimbarra waterfall, where the water has cut through hard quartzite strata, exposing distinct fossilized ripples from an ancient seabed on the rock walls.

Underfoot, the terrain consists of rough, stony dirt tracks and narrow, uneven footpaths that require careful stepping over loose shale and exposed tree roots. There are no paved promenades or extensive boardwalks here; instead, simple dirt paths lead to natural rocky viewpoints overlooking the canyon. The vegetation changes rapidly from parched, aromatic hillside shrubs to dense gallery forests of alders and willows as you descend toward the water level.

This area is not a high-mountain destination with sweeping alpine meadows, nor does it offer gentle, sandy parkland walks. It is a rugged, rocky pocket of wilderness where the focus is on vertical geology and river erosion. While the waterfall itself can dry to a trickle during the hot summer months of July and August, the dramatic rock formations and the steep descent into the gorge remain the primary features of the walk year-round.
