The best hiking routes in Őrségi Nemzeti Park

Őrségi Nemzeti Park sits in the far southwestern corner of Hungary, where the landscape transitions into low, undulating hills rather than dramatic peaks or deep gorges. The terrain is characterized by a dense mosaic of acidic pine and beech forests, damp hay meadows, and small, marshy valley bottoms. Walkers will notice how the clay-heavy soil retains water, creating boggy patches and small peat moss formations in the depressions, while the ridges remain drier underfoot. The traditional human footprint here is visible in the "szer" settlement pattern, where isolated groups of timber houses sit on the hilltops, separated by wide pastures and woodland strips.
