About Naturpark Oberpfälzer Wald
Naturpark Oberpfälzer Wald consists of a gently rolling, heavily forested granite plateau that lacks the dramatic peaks of the high Alps. Instead, walkers will encounter a landscape dominated by dense spruce and pine woods, interspersed with open river valleys and a vast network of historic fish ponds. The terrain is characterized by weathered rock formations, such as the granite blocks found around Falkenberg, and quiet, marshy depressions where peat was once cut.

Underfoot, the paths vary from soft, needle-covered forest tracks to firm gravel forestry roads. In the wetter valley bottoms, particularly along the Waldnaab and Wondreb rivers, the trails can lead across damp meadows or damp earth, though boardwalks are rare. The elevation changes are gradual, making the area suitable for long, steady walks rather than steep climbs.
In late spring, particularly in May, the damp meadows in the river valleys fill with wildflowers, contrasting with the dark, uniform green of the commercial pine forests. The area is generally quiet, though the narrow, rocky gorge of the Waldnaabtal attracts more visitors on weekends, while the open pond landscapes near Tirschenreuth offer a much flatter, more open walking experience.
