The best hiking routes in Nationalpark Jasmund

Nationalpark Jasmund is defined by its steep chalk cliffs and old beech forests, which sit directly on the Baltic Sea coast. The terrain is hilly and uneven, shaped by glacial deposits rather than high mountain ranges. Walking here is a choice between two distinct environments: the dense, shaded canopy of the ancient Stubnitz forest and the exposed cliff edge. The forest floor is rich with damp leaf litter, mosses, and small streams, while the cliff edges offer direct views of the white chalk faces dropping into the sea.

Underfoot, the paths vary significantly. The main trails through the beech forest are mostly packed earth and clay, which can become slick and heavy. Near the cliff edges, the route is often interrupted by exposed tree roots and wooden steps built to manage the steep gradients. There are no sandy beaches directly accessible from most of the high cliff paths; instead, reaching the shoreline requires descending long, steep wooden staircases to a narrow beach made of flint shingles and chalk debris.
