Nationalpark Eifel is characterized by its transition from dense deciduous forests to open, windswept upland plateaus. Walkers will notice a distinct contrast between the deep, shaded valleys filled with beech and oak trees and the exposed, grassy heights of the Dreiborn Plateau. The area is not a place of high, jagged peaks; instead, it offers a landscape of deeply incised river valleys and gently rolling hills that reflect its history as a former military training ground and a regenerating natural forest.

Underfoot, the paths vary from wide, gravelled forestry tracks to narrow, dirt trails that can become muddy after wet weather. In the wooded ravines, the ground is often covered in thick leaf litter, while the open plateaus feature stony paths bordered by gorse bushes, which bloom in bright yellow during May. Wooden boardwalks are rare here, as the terrain relies mostly on natural soil and established forest tracks to guide walkers through the changing woodland.

While the popular paths near the Urft Dam and the former estate of Vogelsang can become busy on weekends, the deeper forest valleys offer a much quieter experience. Walkers should expect steady, sometimes steep climbs out of the valley floors rather than flat strolls, but the terrain lacks the dramatic rocky scrambles found in higher mountain ranges.
