The best hiking routes in Nationaal Park Bosland

Nationaal Park Bosland is a vast forest landscape in the Belgian province of Limburg, dominated by dense pine plantations that were originally grown to support the regional coal mining industry. Today, these uniform conifer stands are interspersed with pockets of native broadleaf trees, dry heathland, and active inland sand dunes. The terrain is mostly flat with gentle, low-lying ridges, meaning you will not find steep climbs or deep valleys here. Instead, the challenge underfoot comes from shifting sand tracks and soft pine needle paths.

Depending on where you enter, the character of the park changes significantly. The central and northern sections feature dry, sandy soils where open dunes like the Sahara in Lommel create wide, exposed clearings. In contrast, other pockets of the park contain wetter soils where small fens and marshy patches are crossed by wooden boardwalks.
