The best hiking routes in Národní park Šumava

Národní park Šumava offers a landscape of vast, high-altitude plateaus, dense spruce forests, and peat bogs rather than dramatic rocky peaks or deep canyons. Walkers should expect gently rolling hills and long, steady climbs. The terrain is defined by its dampness, with extensive wetland systems that you cross via wooden boardwalks. Away from these wet areas, the paths transition into wide, stony forestry tracks and soft, needle-covered soil under the canopy of deep forest.

Because of its history as a restricted border zone, the forest has a quiet, sometimes austere character. You will notice large areas of standing dead wood, the result of bark beetle activity and windstorms, which are left to regenerate naturally. This gives the higher ridges a stark, open appearance, quite different from the managed timber forests elsewhere. Glacial lakes, such as Černé jezero, sit in deep hollows beneath steep, forested cirque walls, providing the few sharp drops in an otherwise rounded landscape.

Underfoot conditions are generally stable, but the experience varies between the popular, paved cycle-pedestrian paths and the rougher, root-crossed dirt trails. In late autumn, often around November, the high bogs become silent and frost-rimed, highlighting the starkness of the dwarf pines. The most visited trailheads can be busy, but the sheer scale of the park means that choosing the longer, unpaved loops quickly leads into quieter, deep-forest solitude.
