Nacionalni park Plitvička jezera is defined by its karst topography, where water continuously shapes the limestone and dolomite bedrock. The park is structured around sixteen named lakes, divided into an upper section of wider, calmer waters and a lower section set within a steep canyon. Walking here means navigating a network of wooden boardwalks laid directly over the water and damp travertine barriers, alongside dirt forest paths that climb the canyon walls. You will notice how the water changes color from green to blue depending on the mineral content and the angle of the light, while active tufa barriers constantly grow and alter the flow of the streams.

Underfoot, the terrain shifts from the level, sometimes damp planks of the lake crossings to steep, gravelly paths with stone steps as you ascend the cliffs. The lower lakes area features narrower paths carved into the rock, leading to the base of the tallest waterfall, while the upper lakes offer wider, gentler forest trails under a canopy of beech and fir trees. This is a landscape of close-up water details and enclosed forest, rather than wide mountain vistas or open horizons.

Because of its international fame, the wooden boardwalks and main viewpoints can become highly congested, particularly during the summer months of July and August. To find quieter paths, you must head away from the central boat crossings and climb into the surrounding beech forests, where the terrain becomes a traditional woodland hike on soil and tree roots. There are no high alpine peaks here; the walking is a mix of lakeside strolling and moderate climbs up the limestone valley sides.
