The best hiking routes in Monte Galero

Monte Galero offers a transition between the maritime Alps and the Ligurian hinterland, characterized by a limestone ridge that separates two distinct microclimates. Walkers will notice a sharp contrast between the southern slopes, where Mediterranean scrub and dry rocky outcrops dominate the path, and the northern side, which features dense beech forests growing in deeper, cooler soil. The terrain is defined by these steep ecological shifts rather than high, jagged peaks, providing a landscape of grassy ridges and exposed limestone pavements.

Underfoot, the trails consist primarily of loose limestone scree, packed dirt through the forested sections, and grassy single-tracks along the ridge line. As you climb, the vegetation changes visibly from shrubby herbs to alpine meadows that bloom with mountain flora in June. The paths are often rugged and uneven, requiring careful placement on the rocky steps, but they do not involve technical climbing or scrambling.

This area is less frequented than the coastal paths nearby, though the main ridge trail can see regular foot traffic during weekends. It is a suitable choice if you prefer observing botanical transitions and limestone geology over deep valley trekking.
